Like many champions before him, Dorian Boccolacci won the Andrea Margutti Trophy 2013 in the current top category of karting, KF. The French driver dominated the meeting, but had to fight until the end to win on the last of the 25 laps of the final. This was his second victory of a season which promises to be an exciting one with Energy Corse and TM.
This meeting - organised in memory of young Andrea Margutti, who passed away in 1989 - has always attracted famous drivers, first on the mythical circuit of Parma and then on the circuit of Lonato, another renowned track, where it moved to in 2012. Famous names of car racing such as Jarno Trulli, Fernando Alonso, Robert Kubica and Davide Forè, Alessandro Manetti and Danilo Rossi, competed in this event in the past and now Dorian Boccolacci has added his name to its prestigious list of winners, which includes famous names such as Giancarlo Fisichella, Teo Fabi, Sophie Kumpen, Sauro Cesetti, Carlo Van Dam, Ben Hanley, Oliver Oakes, Eduardo Mortara, and Marco Ardigo.
Regardless of the edition, battle is always intense at the Margutti Trophy. The 24th edition was no exception to the rule. Dorian missed the pole position in timed qualifying for just 0.0012 seconds, behind the Croatian driver Martin Kodric, but he had his revenge in the qualifying heats, when he won two races in a row. The pre-final was disrupted by an accident at the start which triggered the ''slow'' procedure, the karting equivalent of a Safety Car, and the race resumed its pace only at the 10th lap. Dorian was passed by the Italian Luca Corberi, who knows the South Garda Karting layout very well, and who cunningly blocked an attack launched by the Var driver on the last lap.
Thanks to his formidable kart, Corberi was a tough opponent during the final. After a heated duel on the first two passages, the Italian set sail in the first third of the race. But Dorian did not give up and perfected his trajectories to close the gap, lap after lap, hundredth after hundredth, delaying braking as much as possible with a perseverance that commanded admiration. The race was decided on the last lap. A few hundred meters before his goal, the French driver showed his great braking ability and passed at the turn of the mechanics. Corberi first tried to hold back his attack and then made an attempt to pass again on the following turn, but it was too late. With the ability he showed, Boccolacci was destined to win this race, and indeed he crossed the finish line with his arms upraised, with a lead of over 0.8 seconds over his pursuer.
A victory at the Margutti has always a special taste, which is even more intense considering the reputation of the Italian meeting and, this time, the merit of the winner. Good job Dorian!
